Dibs

When to call dibs:

  • When you want to use a machine in a specific time period
  • When you are going to do a big project in a space
  • When you need it to be quiet for a class
  • When you need to use the whole area
  • When you want to be transparent
  • When you want to use the shop: Read more here

How to call dibs on a tool or area:

  • Go to the relevant channel on Slack
  • Call dibs by saying when you are going to bogart the tool or space
    • Include a start time and an estimated done time – please note you can extend your time by mentioning in on your dibs thread as long as somebody didn’t call dibs after you.
    • Example: Dibs on the tablesaw, Thursday, May 5th from 5 to 8pm
  • Pin the post
  • Remove the pin when you’re done

Quiet Dibs

Sometimes when there are classes in Laser, Metal/Storage, or Clean Fabrication, we need to avoid a lot of loud noise. When it is very loud, people in the adjacent spaces cannot learn in class or hear each other, and the instructor has to shout a lot. These are the loud things that should not be turned on or done during a Quiet Dibs:

  • The Cyclone and Cyclone-supported tools
  • Routers
  • Saws
  • Loud, prolonged banging, such as chiseling hardwood
  • The Laser
  • The metal saws, mill, and drill press
  • Loud sanding – this is contextual. Most sanding is quiet enough to be fine, but using 80 grit on a belt sander on hardwood not so much.

Be thoughtful. Everybody deserves a good learning and teaching experience. Note: Not all instructors/students need the same level of quiet. It is is okay to ask the instructor if a few quick cuts would be okay, etc. but be prepared to be graceful when the answer is no.

Dibs Facts

  • Call as much or as little as you need
  • Check other people’s dibs before you call yours
  • Check the calendar to make sure there is not a class or the peripheral equipment is not reserved (example: the cyclone)
  • If you don’t show up in the first 15 min., folks will consider the tool or area fair game and that you are flaking on your dibs (don’t do this a lot). You can be transparent and let people know you are running late. But please don’t expect the tool to be held more than 20 min. or so. Otherwise, you are just holding the machine.
  • If your dibs dominates a whole room for recording you should put a sign on the door letting people know the recording is going on.
